Solid surface material offers endless design possibilities.
We create original furniture which is not only durable and easy to maintain but can also push boundaries visually and structurally, producing furniture which appeals to the design conscious.
Flexible when heated, solid surface can be thermoformed into many shapes. Any pattern or design can also be incorporated into your furniture surface using a CNC machine.
We convey proposed designs by creating CAD drawings, renders and 3D printed models.
If you would like to know more about the capabilities of solid surface or to discuss a potential design, we would be happy to call you for an informal chat so please contact us here.
WHAT IS SOLID SURFACE ?
Solid surface is a man-made composite sheet material consisting of natural minerals, pure acrylic and natural pigments which combine to create a smooth, non – porous surface. It is warm to the touch, and similar to natural stone. It was first introduced by DuPont in 1967 under the name of Corian.
The reason for its invention was to create a surface which resembled natural stone, but unlike stone it was non-porous which ensured it had anti-bacterial properties.
Since the expiration of their patent, other manufacturers have also introduced their brands such as HI-MACS and Porcelanosa’s Krion. It is available in various sheet thicknesses such as 9mm, 12mm, 19mm, 20mmm and 25mm.
Solid surface has many benefits, the features highlighted below allows us to utilise this material in a wide range of applications and designs.
It has a non-porous surface which means that it is bacteria, mould and mildew resistant.
Dirt and stains are prevented from penetrating the surface and can be easily removed with a cloth and household cleaner.
Click on our video to the right showing how permanent pen and hair dye can be removed from Corian.
The lighter colours of solid surface show very little weather or UV impact after many years in outdoor applications.
This makes it the ideal choice for furniture in outdoor environments.
All three manufacturers of solid surface which we work with are dedicated to making their products increasingly sustainable and more environmentally friendly.
Krion, Hi-Macs and Corian have received important certification regarding their environmental performance.
This includes the Greenguard Indoor Air Quality certificate for low emissions as they have low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) content, with minimal impact on indoor air quality.
Many solid surface products contain recycled content; this can include recycling surplus sheet stock to produce chips which will be used in future production.
For example, Krion’s Ecocycle™ range contains up to 35% of recycled material.
Like all materials, solid surface can scratch but the benefit of this material is that worn surfaces can easily be sanded and buffed smooth again - this is because the surface colour is solid throughout.
It is available in a variety of finishes, ranging from matte to high gloss although most fabricators will recommend a matte or satin finish for ease of maintenance.
They are extremely durable and have extended life cycles, reducing waste and material use.
Solid surface material is underused in furniture design and manufacturing.
Our aim is to increase awareness of its many structural qualities (which are not present in timber or other sheet materials) and highlight its potential by making furniture which is completely new to the market.
All furniture in the product gallery is made to order which gives you the opportunity of customisation if required. Dimensions can be easily altered as well as solid surface colour, ensuring you’re completely satisfied with your furniture.
In addition to the current designs available to purchase, we also offer a bespoke service. Whether you have a design in mind or would like us to fulfil your brief, we enjoy creative challenges from both residential and commercial clients to design and manufacture truly unique pieces of furniture.
All furniture is designed and made in Cambridgeshire, UK using the solid surfaces Dupont™ Corian®, KRION®, HI-MACS® and Durasein® Please click on the links below to see their features and benefits:
